FEMA Information

From Commissioner Jeff Rader:

Sep 29, 2009

Please contact FEMA or GEMA if you are a homeowner, renter or business that has been affected by the flood. It is important to have an accurate report of all damages, even if you do not take advantage of financial assistance. Register for FEMA assistance by calling 1-800-621-3362 or registering on online at www.disasterassistance.gov. No assistance can start until you have applied with FEMA. Once you have applied, an inspection to verify the damages will be made and then financial assistance will be determined. As of this date 9/28/09, 7,000 people have been helped and $2.4 million dollars have already been dispersed to assist flood victims. FEMA can assist with temporary housing, emergency repairs, and replacement of essential household items, transportation and other types of aid. This site also has clean up tips.

Many citizens have indicated that flooding was intensified by obstruction in creeks that drain their neighborhoods. If you are aware of areas where fallen trees or other obstructions block the flow of creeks or streams, please report them to DeKalb's Roads and Drainage Department. Phone numbers and important disaster relief information can be found at http://www.co.dekalb.ga.us/boc/hot_topics.html

Flooding Assistance

From Commissioner Kathie Gannon:

Sep 28, 2009

DeKalb County has been declared, by President Obama, a Federal Disaster Area for personal recovery assistance due to the recent flooding and rain storms. This was an unprecedented Type 1 Disaster so a special Thank You to all of the emergency responding agencies. The recovery will be a long process requiring many partnerships.

If you are a homeowner, renter or business that has been affected by the flood, first and foremost you must apply for aid for personal damage. Register for FEMA assistance by calling 1-800-621-3362 or registering on online at www.disasterassistance.gov. No assistance can start until you have applied with FEMA. Once you have applied an inspection to verify the damage will be made and then financial assistance will be determined. WHNA Volunteer Get Together

Title: WHNA Volunteer Get Together
Location: Loco's Pub, Loehmann's Plaza

Description: Interested in getting involved? Whether you want to do a lot or a little, come and meet us and see if your interested.

I hope you all had a fantastic summer.

As residents of Woodland Hills, maybe you've said to yourself, "I'd like to see this done, or I could help with that."

Well here is your chance. As a board, there is a small group (only 7 of us) who try to act on our neighborhood's behalf. But we can do better. There are a lot of things we want to do, but simply don't have enough manpower. And I know there are great ideas out there that we haven't even thought of yet.

Before I finally got involved in WHNA, I looked for an opportunity to casually say "what can I help with." Big or small it didn't matter to me.

If you feell anything like I did, here is your opportunity to get involved, meet new people, and further our development as a community.

We are hosting a "Meet and Greet" in Loco's Pub, Loehmann's Plaza on Tuesday Oct 6th, 7:30 PM. If you are interested in helping out in anyway (big or small), please RSVP to me president@woodlandhillsatlanta.org. The food and drink are on us!

Still not sure, here is a small list of things we would love your help with.

Welcoming Committee
Traffic Coordinator
Volunteer Coordinator
Neighborhood Watch Block Captains
Board Members
Neighborhood Running Club

So please join us October 6th, meet some neighbors and get involved, big or small. We loved to have your help and input.

THANKS!!!

Please forward this to anyone else who maybe interested in volunteering.

Community Alert: Burglary Prevention

Provided by Crime Awareness Unit of the DeKalb Police Department
25 September 2009

“Burglaries”

There have been an increase in the number of Burglary incidents reported. A
number of these incidents were storage sheds or utility rooms/closets as the
target. The Detectives are diligently working on each incident reported and
would like to suggest the following:
1) Verify that the locking mechanism used on the storage shed or utility room is in good working condition and the doors with “play” or are loose when locks are engaged should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible
2) Advise trusted neighbors of your work schedule, so when a vehicle and/or persons are seen at your home when you are away, they will call 911 to report it
3) Ensure that window & door frames are sturdy; check for dry rot on older doors and windows
4) Do not make it obvious that no one is inside the residence; use timers on lights and televisions
5) If a Suspicious Person or Vehicle is seen, dial 911 immediately for an officer to respond
6) Evaluate the security measures installed in your individual home for effective performance (alarm systems, locks, window security, etc.)

Ways to possibly avoid becoming a victim:
• Secure your home to the best of your ability; do not leave doors or windows open or unlocked when not at the residence
• Lock your vehicle parked in your driveway or under carport at all times
• Use outside lighting to increase the visibility around your home by installing outdoor lighting, such as motion sensor lights
• Call 911 for any suspicious persons or vehicles in your community
• Communicate with your neighbors on any suspicious activity seen

*** Remember if you don’t inform the Police,
the Police don’t know what’s happening in your neighborhood. ***
