SRTS Update

The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) group is moving ahead in planning a Survey of Parents of Briar Vista Elementary School. This will address the distance traveled by students to school now, current obstacles to walking and biking, and desired improvements in the area of the school. The final version will need the approval of the Briar Vista PTA and the coordinator of SRTS for the State of Georgia. It is extremely helpful to have the school's Principal as such an active member of the group.

The SRTS group plans to personally hand out the survey form at the school's open house and at other parent-oriented events at the start of the 2009 - 2010 school year. As 46% of students have English as a second language, there will be a Spanish version too. Plans are being laid for an art contest among the Briar Vista students this upcoming Fall, where they can illustrate and write about how they get to school and the hazards they notice. At present only two families among a total of 383 students regularly walk to the school.

The SRTS group continues to need more volunteers, especially the parents of children that attend Briar Vista. Please contact LLCC Pedestrian Committee Chair Harriet Hoskyns-Abrahall at peds@lindberghlavista.org.
