Increased Crime Alert

Dear Residents,

Last week I notified our residents that gun shots were reported fired in our neighborhood. Since then, I have received another report of gun shots fired early in the morning on Friday January 29th. Two reports of this kind within the same week is alarming and unacceptable.

This morning I discussed the situation with Officer Miller of the DeKalb County Police Department. In response the police will increase the patrolling of Woodlands Hills, particularly late in the night/early in the morning. Officer Miller requests that residents continue to be alert and on guard. If you witness or experience a crime, please do not hesitate to call 911. Please continue to report crimes to the WHNA by emailing me at secretary@woodlandhillsatlanta.org or Brad Grulke at president@woodlandhillsatlanta.org.

I would appreciate it if you forwarded this email to any neighbor or Woodland Hills stakeholder in case they are not included in our distribution list.

If you would like to help keep our neighborhood safe, I encourage you to join Woodland Hills Neighborhood Watch as a block captain.

Again, thank you for doing your part to help keep Woodland Hills safe.

Not the Time for Business as Usual

From Commissioner Jeff Rader:

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

A year ago, I publicly expressed my disappointment in the budget process for DeKalb County. The process, as described in my formal remarks in February 2009, is subject to political considerations and short-term gains at the expense of tough decisions and long-term sustainability. [To read my commentary on 2009 budget, see link at the end.]

It was my hope then that the new county CEO and the new governing structure for the county Board of Commissioners (BOC), each with a full year under its belt, would lead to improvements in the preparation of this year's budget. Sadly, the process seems to have gotten worse, not better.

DeKalb County Public Service Announcement

Dear Residents,
Please see the following Public Service Announcement released by DeKalb County.

Needs Assessment Being Conducted in DeKalb County
By CRWRC Disaster Response
January 20, 2010
The DeKalb Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG) has invited volunteers from the international relief group, Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC). They will be in DeKalb County to help identify individuals and / or families who may need assistance in recovering from the September '09 floods. The CRWRC team will be here for two weeks beginning Monday, February 1, 2010 and ending Friday, February 12, 2010.
The DeKalb Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG) is a volunteer organization of individuals from non-profit and faith-based organizations working with local government agencies in an effort to address the unmet recovery needs of DeKalb residents.
Almost 5000 DeKalb County households registered for assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) after floods tore through parts of the county this past September.
The relief volunteers from CRWRC wear bright green shirts and have photo identification with them at all times. The "green shirts" (as they are known) are trained to assess damage and deal with the psychological after effects from this type of loss. "Needs assessment is a vital step in recovery. It helps the LTRG know who needs the help and what kind of help they need," said CRWRC Team Lead, Char Dykema.
A walk - in station will be available from February 1 through February 12 at the Northlake Church of Christ located at 1625 Cooledge Road in Tucker, GA 30084. The center will be open from 11 am to 7 pm Monday through Friday and from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday, February 6, 2010.
For further information, please call the DeKalb LTRG at 678-406-7747.

Thank you for helping keep Woodland Hills safe!
Sincerely,
